GAIL (India) Limited entered the Exploration & Production (E&P) sector as a strategic move in response to changes in the energy landscape. With rising competition in its core gas transmission and distribution business, and declining reserves from existing fields, it became important to secure reliable and long-term gas supplies. To address this, GAIL expanded into the E&P segment, strengthening its role across the gas value chain and supporting India’s energy needs.
This move was driven by the need to bridge the demand–supply gap in natural gas, enhance energy security, and diversify its business portfolio. It also opened opportunities to invest in global upstream assets. Through its E&P activities, GAIL continues to ensure steady energy supply while supporting the country’s growing demand.
GAIL has Participating Interest (P.I) in 10 E&P blocks of which 8 are in India, 2 blocks in Myanmar.
