GAIL's Moments of Joy is one of the best instances of internal corporate communications, I have seen in a long time. It quotes Ruth C Hawkins: "Fleeting moments of joy, that we can recall..." in its dedication to the "real people with real achievements in GAIL. In the process of showing appreciation for its employees and their innovation, GAIL at the same time, has set a benchmark for creative communication. If creatives are about communicating effectively the "fun" way, this book fits the bill.
The compilation narrates instances of GAIL employees going beyond their roles to make significant contributions that result in cost cutting, problem solving and improving efficiency. Each one-page narrative is accompanied by an interesting caricature or cartoon on the opposite page with a caption which encapsulates the underlying message of the narrative.
The caricatures, whether they be of a blindfolded man hitting the bull's eye or a Russian astronaut floating in space and using a pencil to write, make one feel like going through the entire written piece.
The narratives themselves are written in an easy style. They begin with an interesting example from history or everyday life. The employee, who achieved the feat, then goes on to relate the problem and how he went around solving it. Aptly, each narrative ends with an inspiring quote from a famous person or a scientific fact. My favourite one was about the bumblebee: "According to recognised aero technical tests, the bumblebee cannot fly because of its shape and weight of his body in relation to the total wing area... But the bumblebee does not know this, so he goes ahead and flies anyway." This one related to GAIl having to take on controlled blasting of rocky terrain close to a high pressure gas trunk line. There was no precedent for this in India.
Designed attractively in pale yellow, the book meets all criterias of creativity and effective communication. It also gives the GAILians something to cherish. Kudos to GAIl for providing another motivation for good work.
