GAIL CMD dedicates model village At Borgum Basti

Lakwa, Dist. Sivasagar (Assam), May 27, 2008. Dr. U D Choubey, Chairman and Managing Director, GAIL (India) Limited today dedicated the model village facilitated by GAIL at Borgum Basti at Lakwa. The amenities and facilities have been set up by GAIL as part of the integrated development project of the village comprising 23 families. Shri R . K. Goel, Director (Financer), Shri Santosh Kumar, Director (Projects), and Shri B C Tripathi, Director (Marketing) along with other senior officials of GAIL were present on the occasion.
The integrated development of the village “Borgum Basti” was undertaken as part of the Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative in association with the “Development Committee”, Lakwa with a specific thrust on improvement in the areas of drinking water, communication (roads), control of flood water, education etc. with Rs. 10.00 lakh exclusively invested for this project.
Under the integrated development work programme, various activities for improving the infrastructure in the village, promoting education, enhancing living conditions and healthcare have been undertaken such as cleaning and digging of drains to cater to the flood water, strengthening and raising level of old “Kuttcha” roads and construction of new “Kuttcha” roads. Further, 2 new hand pumps have been installed and 5 existing hand pumps has been repaired as a result of which, all the 23 residents of the Basti are now having individual hand pumps. In order to promote education in the village, 4 bicycles have been provided for the high school students and 26 school bags given for all the school children. Tie ups have been made with the “Chalapather Nabajyoti Jubak Sangha” for free medical health check up of the residents of the Borgum Basti. Sulabh International, North East branch has completed the construction of 23 “Pour flush latrine with dry circular twin pit” in the Borgum Basti.
GAIL as a responsible corporate citizen has undertaken various developmental activities in and around our work centers under the CSR Thrust Areas and has done various developmental activities in support for the special children of the country. In Sivasagar District, GAIL has spent over Rs.2 crore on various CSR activities in the past five years. Some of the activities undertaken by GAIL as a part of its CSR initiatives in Sivasagar District include on going construction of Pavilion in the Piyoli Phukan Sports Stadium, Bitumin carpeting of road to Challapathar and CISF Colony from Rajgarh Road, Yuva Samridhi Project(Financial Assistance to the extent of 30 % of project cost to Self Help Groups in the area of Fisheries, Diary, Poultry and Animal Husbandary), development of e-Governance programme, construction of community hall/ Libaray at village Challapathar, construction of two Paying Cabins in the Civil Hospital, Joysagar, Auditorium in the Fulleswari Girls H. S. School, construction / renovation of Public Toilet at Civil Hospital etc.
At GAIL, Corporate Social Responsibility stands for continuing commitment for operating the core business in socially responsible way, complemented by investment in communities to produce an overall positive impact on society. The Company as a policy has allocated 1% of its net profit after tax (PAT) of the previous financial year for CSR activities.
