GAIL signs Gas Co-operation Agreement with TIDCO

Chennai, June 6, 2008. GAIL (India) Limited and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO) signed a Gas Cooperation Agreement here today. The Gas Cooperation Agreement was signed by Mr. B C Tripathi, Director (Marketing), GAIL and Mr. Kumar Jayant, Executive Director, TIDCO in presence of Dr. U D Choubey, Chairman and Managing Director, GAIL and Mr. S. Ramasundaram, Chairman and Managing Director, TIDCO.
As a part of the Gas Cooperation Agreement, GAIL will conduct preliminary techno-economic feasibility study for gas demand potential in industrial, commercial, transport, residential sectors and evaluate medium and long term gas demand potential of the State. GAIL will also assess pipeline infrastructure and associated facilities required for supply of natural gas including optical fibre network. The Company will determine Natural Gas supply options to Tamil Nadu on long term competitive basis.
After the market assessment study and based on the techno-economic feasibility, GAIL may undertake development of pipeline infrastructure and associated facilities together with natural gas sourcing either on its own or from other sources for overall industrial growth and development of the state.
Speaking on the development, Dr. U D Choubey, CMD, GAIL said that "The joint Gas Co-operation Agreement between GAIL and TIDCO would help in preparation of the future road map for realizing the Natural Gas potential in the state of Tamil Nadu".
GAIL in Tamil Nadu
GAIL started its Natural Gas activities in the state of Tamil Nadu in 1992 with a quantity of 30,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD) and currently supplies more than 30 lakh SCMD of gas to 31 industries using around 200 km. of pipeline network in the districts of Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu. 92 percent of the gas being supplied is used to produce about 600 MW of power to the state and the balance is being used for production of LPG and other products. GAIL also supplies Petrochemicals and Liquid Hydrocarbons to number of industries in the state.
GAIL as a consortium partner has participating interest in 8 oil and gas exploration blocks in Cauvery Basin under the New Exploration and Licensing Policy (NELP).
In its endeavour to connect gas supply sources with the markets, GAIL is in the process of laying a 30", 840 km long pipeline from Kochi to Mangalore / Bangalore. Of this, about 400 km pipeline will pass through Coimbatore, Erode, Salem and Dharmapuri districts of Tamilnadu and will supply gas to industrial clusters in these districts.
