GAIL to invite EOI for transporting CNG from Myanmar to India
GAIL (India) Limited
(New Delhi, February 19, 2006.)
New Delhi, February 19, 2006.GAIL is soon to invite Expression of Interest (EOI) to select a firm / consortium through international competitive bidding for long term chartering service of CNG ship / barge for transportation of Natural Gas from A1 Block, Myanmar to the East Coast of India. There are several technologies available for CNG marine transportation which is on the verge of being pressed into commercial service.
GAIL as one of the stake holders in A1 Block, Myanmar is the preferred buyer of the A1 block gas. GAIL has carried out pre-feasibility study to market the Natural gas in India from this source. Various routes being considered for the off-take include offshore pipelines (including shallow water and deep water); onshore pipelines (via Chittagaon - Cox’s Bazaar (Bangladesh), via Tripura (India) - Dhaka (Bangladesh), through North East Indian territory); LNG marine route and CNG marine route
In the given context of prospective size of the Gas field and the distance of the field from the east coast of India, around 600 km, the option for transporting the gas in the form of CNG by Ship or barge appears to be most attractive compared to the other options in terms of capital investment and shipping cost / pipeline transmission tariff..
