GAIL to explore gas in Ethiopia

New Delhi, April 13, 2006: GAIL (India) Limited has been shortlisted by Ministry of Mines and Energy, Government of Ethiopia to participate in the bidding process for exploration and development of Calub and Hilala gas field in Ogaden onland basin in Ethiopia

GAIL had responded to the notice published by Ministry of Mines and Energy, Government of Ethiopia in March 2006, for the development of two gas condensate fields which are estimated to contain about 4 TCF of gas. As per preliminary information examined by GAIL, it is evident that both the fields may require more exploration resulting in further enhancement in gas and condensate reserves. GAIL had submitted its Expression of Interest together with Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (GSPC).

As per the communication of pre-qualification received from Ministry of Mines and Energy, Government of Ethiopia, the bids are due for submission by 10th June 2006. The two gas fields on offer are remotely located and therefore, commercial exploitation of gas reserves would need setting up of gas processing facilities and a long distance gas pipeline to reach the potential markets. All these activities fall within the area of GAIL's core competence and operations and hence GAIL will participate in the bidding process with full interest.
