PSPB Carrom Tournament - GAIL CMD, Director (BD) give away prizes ONGC wins team championships World Cup Champion and India’s no. 1 wins Men’s Singles and Doubles Title

New Delhi, December 15, 2006.The 27th PSPB Carrom Tournament came to an end today with GAIL CMD and Director (HR), Shri M R Hingnikar announcing the formal close of the tournament on the final day of the championships. Shri Hingnikar also gave away the prizes for the team championships and Shri A K Purwaha, Director (BD) distributed the prizes for individual performances in the tournament. Shri V K Bawa, Secretary, PSPB; Shri S K Sharma, Secretary General, International Chess Federation and senior GAIL officials were also present on the occasion.
At the PSPB Carrom championship, World Cup Champion and India’s No. 1 player, Yogesh Pardesi of IOC beat K. Ramesh Babu also of IOC, 25-0, 25-19 to clinch the Men’s Singles Title. In the Women’s Singles Final, Sneha More of IOC defeated P. Thangamalar of ONGC, 25-0, 25-1 to win the Women’s Singles title.
In the men’s Doubles event, World Cup Champion and India’s top player Yogesh Pardesi and K Ramesh Babu of IOC have won the men’s double championship. The duo defeated Sandeep Deorikhkar and Ashok Gaur of ONGC (25-21, 25-25) in the finals to clinch the title
In the women’s Doubles event, P Thangamalar and P Das of ONGC defeated Sandhya More and Madhuri Tayshete of IOC 2-1(5-25, 25-18, 25-19).
In the PSPB Carrom Tournament this year, ONGC won the men as well as women team championships at the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) Carom tournament being played here
In the team championships, ONGC defeated IOC 2-1. In a major upset, Sandeep Deorukhkar of ONGC defeated the top ranked Indian carom player and current World Cup Champion Yogesh Pardesi of IOC 0-25, 25-16, 25-12. Ashok Gaur of ONGC defeated Simon Issac of IOC 25/05, 25/00. However, K Ramesh Babu of IOC defeated Naresh Rathod of ONGC 23-25, 25-04, 25-09.
In the Women’s Team Championships, ONGC defeated IOC 2-1. In the first round, S Nagwekar of ONGC defeated Durgesha Paradkar of IOC 19-09, 11-19, 23-10. In another round, P Das of ONGC defeated Madhuri Tayshete of IOC 25-00, 23-24, 25-15. In the last round, Sneha More of IOC defeated P Thangamalar of ONGC 25-05, 25-08.
A total of 85 players including 60 men and 25 women from ONGC, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bongaigaon Refineries & Petrochemicals Limited (BRPL), Engineers India Limited (EIL), GAIL, IBP, IPCL and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) participated in this tournament. Prominent players who participated in the Tournament include Yogesh Pardesi of IOCL who won the recently played World Cup Championship in November 2006, Sandeep Deorukhar and P Thangamalar of ONGC and K Ramesh Babu of IOC.
