GAIL was assigned the laying of India's first major inland cross country Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) gas pipeline through Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi, in 1986. Subsequently a gas Expansion and Rehabilitation project was undertaken that included laying of a 505-km loop line of 36" with additional compression facilities. It was commissioned in March 1997. Currently the HVJ pipeline is over 2800 km long.
The HVJ pipeline system consists of receiving / dispatch terminals for the supply of metered gas, compressor stations for boosting the pressure of gas, the SCADA system to provide central monitoring and control and a dedicated GAILTELmunications system to provide reliable voice and data communication.
